The Chinon appellation area

The Loire Valley is France's 3rd largest wine-growing region.

• 1937: date of the creation of the communal appellation (one of the largest in France).
• 2400: total hectares in the appellation area.
• 26: communes covered by the AOC around the town of Chinon, including both banks of the Vienne up to the confluence with the Loire in the department of Indre-et-Loire.
• 165: winegrowing estates listed*.
• 2: grape varieties covered by the AOC: > Cabernet franc for 85% of production (red wines) and 10% (rosé wines). > Chenin accounts for 5% of white wine production (the 3rd most important white grape variety in the Loire).
• The 1st red appellation in the Loire Valley.
• 13 million: bottles produced per year*.
• 100,000: hectolitres produced per year*.
• Climate: Temperate with an oceanic influence (the warmest climate in the Touraine region).
• Chinon around the world: 10% of annual production is sold for export, half to the United States.
